Oct. 2, 2026

This past week, the contractor removed and replaced sidewalk in the northwest quadrant of the roundabout and removed an outdated section of storm sewer from Ann Street. Both crosswalks at the roundabout reopened, along with all sidewalks and driveway entrances around the outside of the roundabout. Crews also completed most of the concrete work on the center island.

For the week of Oct. 5:

• Complete the remaining concrete work on the center island.
• Later in the week, mill the north half of Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and the roundabout and the east half of Observatory Street between the roundabout and north of East Medical Center Drive.
• Grade the roadway after milling in preparation for paving.
• Pave the roundabout Sunday, Oct. 11, weather permitting.

• Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and Observatory Street is open to eastbound traffic only.

Sept. 25, 2026

This past week, the contractor completed underground electrical work for streetlights in the roundabout area and replaced concrete affected by the work. Crews also completed the remaining half of the Cardiovascular Center driveway entrances.

For the week of Sept. 28:

• Remove and replace sidewalk in the northwest quadrant of the roundabout.
• Remove an outdated section of storm sewer from Ann Street.
• Access to the Cardiovascular Center will be maintained at all times. Vehicles should enter the roundabout from eastbound Ann Street and travel along the south and east sides of the roundabout to reach the Cardiovascular Center entrance.
• Paving of the roundabout is anticipated for the weekend of Oct. 10 and 11.

• While the northwest quadrant of the roundabout is closed, people walking should follow the posted detour.
• Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and Observatory Street is open to eastbound traffic only.

Sept. 18, 2026

This past week, the contractor transitioned to Phase 2B. Crews removed and replaced portions of sidewalk and curb on the east side of the roundabout.

For the week of Sept. 21:

• Continue removing and replacing concrete in the roundabout area, primarily curbs and driveway openings.
• Access to the Cardiovascular Center will be maintained at all times. Vehicles should enter the roundabout from eastbound Ann Street and travel along the south and east sides of the roundabout to reach the Cardiovascular Center entrance.
• Paving of the roundabout is currently anticipated for the weekend of Oct. 10 and 11.

This past week, the contractor restored and reopened the sidewalk on the south side of Ann Street just east of Zina Pitcher Place. Crews also milled the south half of Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and the roundabout and the west half of Observatory Street between the roundabout and north of East Medical Center Drive. Paving was delayed due to weather and is now planned for next week.

For the week of Sept. 7:

• No work is scheduled Monday, Sept. 7, due to Labor Day.
• Pave the south half of Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and the roundabout and the west half of Observatory Street between the roundabout and north of East Medical Center Drive.
• Adjust utility structures within the newly paved area.

Aug. 28, 2026

This past week, work on the Zina Pitcher, Catherine and E. Ann Street Improvements Project was paused for University of Michigan move in week. A separate University utility repair was completed across Ann Street just east of Zina Pitcher Place.

For the week of Aug. 31:

• Monday, Aug. 31: Restore the section of sidewalk and curb on the south side of Ann Street just east of Zina Pitcher Place that was affected by the University utility repair.
• Wednesday, Sept. 2: Mill the south half of Ann Street between Zina Pitcher Place and the roundabout and the west half of Observatory Street between the roundabout and north of East Medical Center Drive. Milling operations can be loud, including intermittent horn use for communication between equipment operators.
• Thursday, Sept. 3: Grade the roadway near the roundabout and other areas as needed in preparation for paving.
• Friday, Sept. 4: Pave the first layer of asphalt, weather permitting.
• Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Detour routes and continuing travel impacts:

• Beginning Monday, Aug. 31, the crosswalks on the west and south sides of the Observatory Street roundabout will be closed. People walking should follow the posted detour.

This past week:

• The contractor completed traffic signal upgrades, streetlight foundations, curb and sidewalk installation on the south side of Ann Street.
• A small section of sidewalk on the south side of Ann Street, just east of Zina Pitcher Place, remains closed for a separate University of Michigan utility repair.
• On the afternoon of Aug. 21, the contractor will remove construction equipment and materials from the site for University of Michigan move in week.
• Beginning the afternoon of Aug. 21, traffic control will remain in place for the University utility repair. Pedestrian detour signs will be posted.

For the week of Aug. 24:

• Work on the Zina Pitcher, Catherine and E. Ann Street Improvements Project will pause for University of Michigan move in week.
• A closure will remain in place for the separate University utility repair.
• On Aug. 31, the project contractor will return and restore the Phase 2A traffic configuration.

Aug. 14, 2026

This past week, the contractor continued installing curb and sidewalk and began electrical work for new streetlights and traffic signal upgrades.

For the week of Aug. 17:

• Continue electrical work for traffic signal upgrades and new streetlights.
• Continue curb and sidewalk installation.
• Reopen Ann Street to vehicle traffic and sidewalks to pedestrians.
• Beginning Aug. 21, the contractor will remove construction equipment and materials from the site for University of Michigan move in activities. The closure will be reestablished Aug. 31.

Aug. 7, 2026

This past week, the contractor completed pavement markings at the Glen Avenue and Catherine Street intersection. The contractor also installed bike bollards, shifted traffic to the new phase, and began installing storm sewer.

For the week of Aug. 10:

• Lower utility structures
• Perform curb and sidewalk removals on the south side of Ann Street between Zina Pitcher and Observatory
• Continue traffic signal and streetlight upgrades on the south side of the Ann Street and Zina Pitcher intersection
• Begin concrete curb and sidewalk replacements

July 31, 2026

This past week, the contractor installed pavement markings on Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and on Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place.

For the week of Aug. 3:

• Install bike bollards on Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street.
• Reopen Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and Catherine Street to normal traffic.
• Zina Pitcher Place between Huron Street and just south of Ann Street will remain closed through October for a separate University of Michigan project.
• Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4, weather permitting, shift construction to the south side of Ann Street east of Zina Pitcher Place and the west side of Observatory Street between the roundabout and north of East Medical Center Drive.
• Begin storm sewer installation on Ann Street.
• Remove sections of curb and sidewalk on Ann Street.

July 24, 2026

This past week, the contractor completed installation of underground traffic signal infrastructure at the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection and installed new sidewalk in the northeast quadrant of the intersection. Crews also adjusted utility covers on Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place.

For the week of July 27:

• Install pavement markings on Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and on Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place.
• University employees should expect traffic delays while pavement markings are installed July 30 through Aug. 1 and should allow extra travel time.

Looking ahead to the week of Aug. 3:

• Construction will transition from Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and Catherine Street to Ann Street east of Zina Pitcher Place and Observatory Street between Ann Street and East Medical Center Drive.
• During August, traffic will be restricted to northbound Observatory Street and westbound Ann Street.
• Eastbound Ann Street and southbound Observatory Street traffic will be detoured via Glen Avenue, Huron Street, Washtenaw Avenue, Geddes Avenue, Observatory Street and East Medical Center Drive.
• Access to the Kahn Health Care Pavilion, Cardiovascular Center, Couzens Hall, Simpson Institute and the Detroit Observatory will be maintained.

July 17, 2026

This past week, the contractor removed sidewalk and completed traffic signal upgrade work in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection.

For the week of July 20:

• Complete traffic signal upgrades in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection.
• Pour foundations for the new traffic signals.
• Install sidewalk in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.
• Apply pavement markings.

July 10, 2026

This past week, the contractor removed and replaced sections of curb and sidewalk on Catherine Street between Zina Pitcher Place and Glen Avenue and completed curb work in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection. The contractor will also complete paving on Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and on Catherine Street between Zina Pitcher Place and Glen Avenue on Saturday, July 11, weather permitting.

For the week of July 13:

• Remove sidewalk in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection beginning July 14.
• Begin traffic signal upgrades on July 15.
• Complete traffic signal upgrades by the end of the week and restore sidewalk access following the work.

July 2, 2026

This week, the contractor milled (removed) pavement on the north side of Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place and replaced sections of storm sewer along the same corridor.

For the week of July 6:

• Remove curb and sidewalk in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection.
• Remove and replace sections of sidewalk on the north side of Catherine Street between West Medical Center Drive and Zina Pitcher Place.
• Pour new curb in the northeast quadrant of the Zina Pitcher Place and Ann Street intersection.
• Complete milling touch-up work in preparation for paving on Zina Pitcher Place and Catherine Street.
• Pave the remaining asphalt on Zina Pitcher Place and Catherine Street on Saturday, July 11, weather permitting.

June 26, 2026

Work completed this past week:

Crews adjusted utility covers on Catherine Street between Zina Pitcher Place and Glen Avenue. They also replaced sidewalk at the northwest corner of Ann Street and Zina Pitcher Place.

Week of June 29:

• Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 29, traffic on Zina Pitcher Place north of Ann Street and on Catherine Street will shift to nearby travel lanes for the next phase of work.
• This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through Aug. 1.
• Crews will remove pavement from the north lane of Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place.
• Crews will replace sections of aging storm sewer on Catherine Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place.

June 19, 2026

This week, the contractor finished paving the south lanes of Catherine Street between Glen and Zina Pitcher and the west lane of Zina Pitcher between Ann and Catherine. The Contractor also finished removals for signal work at the Ann and Zina Pitcher intersection’s northwest quadrant.

For the week of June 22:

• Adjust structures within the paving limits from last week.
• Replace concrete sidewalk on the northwest corner of the Ann and Zina Pitcher intersection.
• Install traffic signal components in the northwest quadrant of Ann and Zina Pitcher. This work will be accompanied by a temporary lane shift for westbound traffic on Ann St. This lane shift will be removed at the conclusion of construction activities each day.

June 12, 2026

This week, the contractor milled the southern half of the Catherine Street surface between Glen and Zina Pitcher. The contractor also applied the first course of new asphalt to the milled surface.

For the week of June 15:

• Apply the top asphalt layer to the southern half of Catherine from Glen to Zina Pitcher and the west lane of Zina Pitcher between Ann and Catherine.
• Continuing traffic signal upgrade work at the intersection of Ann and Zina Pitcher.

June 5, 2026

This past week, the contractor reopened the west, east, and north legs of the Zina Pitcher/East Ann intersection.

The contractor transitioned to Phase 1B, which focuses on the west side of Zina Pitcher between Ann and Catherine, and the south side of Catherine between Zina Pitcher and Glen.

The contractor removed and replaced curb, sidewalk, and the Catherine Street parking garage driveway opening on the south side of Catherine between Glen and Zina Pitcher.

For the week of June 8:

• Mill and pave the south lanes of the Catherine Street surface between Glen and Zina Pitcher. Underlying concrete road repairs will be performed as needed before paving.
• Pave the west half of Zina Pitcher from Ann to Catherine.

May 29, 2026

This week, the Contractor paved the intersection of Zina Pitcher and E. Ann St. after making aggregate base repairs.

For the week of June 1st:

• Reopen Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
• The contractor will transition from Phase 1A to Phase 1B (June 2), opening the intersection of Ann/ZP to east/west traffic under stop sign control, and allowing 1 lane of NB traffic on ZP from Ann to Catherine. Catherine will return to one-way WB traffic between ZP and Glen. ZP between Huron and Ann will remain closed.
• On the south side of Catherine from ZP to Glen, the contractor will remove and replace curb, sidewalk, and the Catherine Street parking garage driveway approach.

May 22, 2026

This week, the Contractor poured new curb at the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St., paved Zina Pitcher from E. Ann St to Catherine St, and paved the intersection of Zina Pitcher and E. Ann St.

For the week of May 25th:

• Adjust utility structure covers within the new pavement.
• Install traffic control devices at Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection.
• Reopen Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection by Friday, May 29, 2026.
• No work will take place on Monday, May 25, due to Memorial Day.

May 15, 2026

This week, the Contractor installed new storm sewer structures in the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St.

For the week of May 18th:

• Finish placing traffic signal conduit in the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St
• Pour new curb in the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St
• Prepare the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St for asphalt paving

May 8, 2026

This week, the Contractor closed the Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection and proceeded to remove pavement and begin storm sewer repairs in the intersection.

For the week of May 11th:

• Install new storm sewer structures in the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St
• Begin installation of new traffic signal conduit in the intersection of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St

This week, the Contractor prepared traffic control elements for the road closure on Monday, May 4.

For the week of May 4:

• Implement maintenance of traffic, close Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection, close Zina Pitcher from Huron to Catherine
• Mill existing pavement of Zina Pitcher/E. Ann St intersection
• Remove existing intersection storm sewer

Why is this project being done?

The Zina Pitcher Place, Catherine Street, and East Ann Street project is being undertaken because this area was identified in the City’s Annual Resurfacing Program as needing road repaving. Since the streets were already scheduled for resurfacing, the City is taking this opportunity to incorporate additional transportation improvements to better align the corridor with our Moving Together Towards Vision Zero goals and to enhance mobility and safety for all users.

These improvements support the City’s commitment to:

• Focus transportation investments on corridors and intersections with the highest incidence of serious crashes.
• Install at least three quick-build safety projects per year, with priority given to identified focus areas.
• Expand a safe and comfortable network of bike routes that serve people of all ages and abilities.

What work will be done as apart of this project?

• Resurfacing of Zina Pitcher Place (Huron Street to Catherine Street), Catherine Street (Glen Street to Zina Pitcher Place), and East Ann Street (Zina Pitcher Place to Observatory Street) corridors.
• Enhancements of pedestrian and bicycle safety.

What outcomes will result from the Project?

• ‘Ride quality’ will improve for drivers and bicycle users.
• Drainage will be improved along the corridors, with special attention given to the Observatory roundabout.
• Sidewalk ramps will be upgraded to meet ADA standards.
• A two-way cycle track will be provided on Catherine Street to separate cyclists from motorized traffic.
• Traffic signal infrastructure will be upgraded at the Zina Pitcher and Ann intersection.

Project funding sources

The project is funded by the City of Ann Arbor Storm Water Fund, and the City of Ann Arbor Act 51 Major Streets Fund
