Project Overview
This project primarily consists of a new sidewalk along the east side of South Main Street between Scio Church Road and Stadium Boulevard. The project also includes installation of a retaining wall, fencing, and bike lane improvements.
June 5, 2026
This past week, the contractor continued installing soil erosion control devices. The contractor completed removal of the existing stone retaining wall and began initial grading in the area for the new wall. Guardrail and brush removal continued as per plan. The contractor also began removal of existing road signs as needed.
For the week of June 8:
- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.
- Continue guardrail removal only as necessary for construction activities.
- Continue installation of soil erosion control devices.
- Continue with machine grading in the areas for the proposed retaining walls.
Traffic will continue to be detoured as follows:
- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- Turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be maintained throughout construction.
- Snyder Avenue off South Main Street will be closed to traffic. Vehicles can take westbound Berkley Ave to southbound Belmar Place.
May 29, 2026
This past week, the contractor installed soil erosion control devices. The contractor also removed existing fencing and installed temporary construction fencing only as necessary. Maintenance of traffic (MOT) devices were installed and approved. Guardrail and brush removal continued as per plan.
For the week of June 1:
- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.
- Continue guardrail removal only as necessary for construction activities.
Traffic will continue to be detoured as follows:
- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- Turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be maintained throughout construction.

This past week, the contractor finalized traffic control devices for lane closures, finished tree removal and guardrail removal, and began brush removal.
For the week of May 25:
- Install soil erosion control devices.
- Remove existing fencing and begin installation of temporary construction fencing.
- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.
Traffic will continue to be detoured as follows:
- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.

This past week, the contractor prepared traffic control devices for lane closures.
For the week of May 18:
- Implement traffic control devices.
- Install soil erosion control devices.
- Begin implementing temporary construction fencing.
- Begin tree trimming and clearing only as necessary for construction activities.

- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.

May 11, 2026
This week, the Contractor will prepare traffic control elements for lane closures on Thursday, May 14.
For the week of May 11:
- No work will take place Monday to Wednesday (5/11-5/13) due to the University of Michigan NCAA golf tournament.
- Implement traffic control devices.

- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- Turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be maintained throughout construction.
Why is this project being done?
To improve pedestrian access along the east side of the S. Main Street corridor from Scio Church Road to Stadium Boulevard.
Work to be done
Install sidewalk, retaining wall, fencing, and concrete bump out, miscellaneous landscaping, and pedestrian signal installation for crossing S. Main Street.
Cost and funding source
Funding split between City of Ann Arbor Sidewalk Construction Millage and The University of Michigan supplemented with federal funding through the Michigan Department of Transportation Local Agency Program.
Lane closures and traffic shift for northbound and left turn vehicle traffic. Northbound traffic will travel along the center left turn lane and the center left turn lane will be shifted into the easterly southbound lane.
Bicycles and other vehicles will share lanes while the closures are in place.
Property owners and stakeholders will be provided with updates throughout the project.
