Project Overview
This project primarily consists of a new sidewalk along the east side of South Main Street between Scio Church Road and Stadium Boulevard. The project also includes installation of a retaining wall, fencing, and bike lane improvements.
Why is this project being done?
To improve pedestrian access along the east side of the S. Main Street corridor from Scio Church Road to Stadium Boulevard.
Work to be done
Install sidewalk, retaining wall, fencing, and concrete bump out, miscellaneous landscaping, and pedestrian signal installation for crossing S. Main Street.
Cost and funding source
Funding split between City of Ann Arbor Sidewalk Construction Millage and The University of Michigan supplemented with federal funding through the Michigan Department of Transportation Local Agency Program.
August 7, 2026
This past week, the contractor completed installing soldier piles, excavating, and grading for the final wall segments.
For the week of August 10:
- All equipment and materials associated with construction will be demobilized from the site. Traffic will be restored to its original configuration prior to construction on August 14. The roadway will be fully open, and construction will be paused for the Michigan football season, from August 15 through November 30.
Traffic will be detoured as follows:
- Traffic will be maintained in all bounds.
- The turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be maintained throughout construction.
- Snyder Avenue off South Main Street will be closed to traffic. Vehicles can take westbound Berkley Avenue to southbound Belmar Place.
- All detours will be removed and traffic will be restored to its original configuration prior to construction in preparation for the Michigan football season on August 14.
July 31, 2026
This past week, the contractor continued installing soldier piles, excavating and grading for the final retaining wall segments.
For the week of Aug. 3:
- Complete installation of soldier piles, excavation and grading for the final retaining wall segments
Detour routes and continuing travel impacts:
- One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on South Main Street throughout construction.
- The center turn lane between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will remain open during construction.
- Snyder Avenue at South Main Street will remain closed. Drivers should use westbound Berkley Avenue and southbound Belmar Place as an alternate route.
July 24, 2026
This past week, the contractor completed installation of soldier piles for the second and third sections of the retaining wall. Crews also installed a temporary 6 foot chain link fence around the work zone in preparation for the event at Michigan Stadium.
For the week of July 27:
- Continue installing soldier piles for the remaining retaining wall sections.
- Continue excavation and grading for the final wall segments.
Detour routes and continuing travel impacts:
- Traffic will be maintained in all directions.
- The center turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will remain open throughout construction.
- Snyder Avenue at South Main Street remains closed. Drivers should detour via westbound Berkley Avenue and southbound Belmar Place.
July 17, 2026
This past week, construction paused for the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Equipment and materials were secured within the work zone on the east side of South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard. No construction work took place during the event. Two northbound lanes and one southbound lane remained open to traffic.
For the week of July 20:
- Construction will resume July 20.
- Continue excavation and grading for the remaining sections of the retaining wall.
- No construction work will take place Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, in preparation for the event at Michigan Stadium.

- Traffic will be maintained in all directions.

July 10, 2026
This past week, the contractor completed drilling soldier piles for the first section of the retaining wall, completed excavation for the second section and began drilling soldier piles for that section.
For the week of July 13:
- Continue drilling soldier piles for the second section of the retaining wall.
- Construction operations will pause Wednesday evening, July 15, in preparation for the Ann Arbor Art Fair.
- No construction work will take place during the Ann Arbor Art Fair, July 16 through July 18.
Detour routes and continuing travel impacts:
- Beginning Wednesday evening, July 15, two northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will reopen for the Ann Arbor Art Fair.
- Southbound South Main Street will continue to shift lanes north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound traffic between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- The center turn lane between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will remain open throughout construction.
- Snyder Avenue at South Main Street remains closed. Drivers should detour via westbound Berkley Avenue and southbound Belmar Place.
July 2, 2026
This past week, the contractor continued drilling soldier piles for the proposed retaining walls and excavated the next section of retaining wall.
For the week of July 6:
- Continue drilling soldier piles for the proposed retaining walls.
- Continue excavation and site preparation for the next retaining wall section, including additional tree trimming as needed.
Detour routes and continuing travel impacts:
- Northbound South Main Street will shift lanes between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound traffic between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound South Main Street will shift lanes north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound traffic between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- The center turn lane between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will remain open throughout construction.

June 26, 2026
Work completed this past week:
Crews continued drilling foundations for the new retaining walls and began excavating the next section of wall.
Week of June 29:
- Continue drilling foundations for the new retaining walls.
- Continue excavating and preparing the next section of retaining wall.
- Perform additional tree trimming as needed.
Traffic impacts:
- Northbound South Main Street will be reduced to one lane between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard. A lane shift will be in place between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road.
- Southbound South Main Street will be reduced to one lane between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road. A lane shift will be in place north of West Stadium Boulevard.
- The center turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will remain open.

June 12, 2026
This past week, the contractor continued machine grading in the area for the proposed retaining walls. Guardrail and brush removal were completed. The contractor continued installing soil erosion control devices.
For the week of June 15:

- Begin drilling soldier piles in the areas for the proposed retaining walls.

- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.

June 5, 2026
This past week, the contractor continued installing soil erosion control devices. The contractor completed removal of the existing stone retaining wall and began initial grading in the area for the new wall. Guardrail and brush removal continued as per plan. The contractor also began removal of existing road signs as needed.
For the week of June 8:
- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.

May 29, 2026
This past week, the contractor installed soil erosion control devices. The contractor also removed existing fencing and installed temporary construction fencing only as necessary. Maintenance of traffic (MOT) devices were installed and approved. Guardrail and brush removal continued as per plan.

- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.

This past week, the contractor finalized traffic control devices for lane closures, finished tree removal and guardrail removal, and began brush removal.
For the week of May 25:
- Install soil erosion control devices.
- Remove existing fencing and begin installation of temporary construction fencing.
- Continue brush clearing only as necessary for construction activities.
Traffic will continue to be detoured as follows:
- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.

This past week, the contractor prepared traffic control devices for lane closures.
For the week of May 18:
- Implement traffic control devices.
- Install soil erosion control devices.
- Begin implementing temporary construction fencing.
- Begin tree trimming and clearing only as necessary for construction activities.

This week, the Contractor will prepare traffic control elements for lane closures on Thursday, May 14.
For the week of May 11:
- No work will take place Monday to Wednesday (5/11-5/13) due to the University of Michigan NCAA golf tournament.
- Implement traffic control devices.
Lane closures and other travel impacts:
- Northbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Scio Church Road. Northbound lanes on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.
- Southbound lanes on South Main Street will experience a lane shift north of West Stadium Boulevard. Southbound lanes on South Main Street between West Stadium Boulevard and Scio Church Road will be reduced to one lane.
- Turn lane on South Main Street between Scio Church Road and West Stadium Boulevard will be maintained throughout construction.
Lane closures and traffic shift for northbound and left turn vehicle traffic. Northbound traffic will travel along the center left turn lane and the center left turn lane will be shifted into the easterly southbound lane.
Bicycles and other vehicles will share lanes while the closures are in place.
Property owners and stakeholders will be provided with updates throughout the project.
