Why is this project being done?
- The existing South Barton Bridge has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement.
- The bridge provides a key pedestrian and non-motorized link along the Border to Border Trail.
- Replacing the bridge also provides an opportunity to improve this connection and bring it up to current trail standards.
Work to be done
- Preliminary alternatives analysis is underway.
- Process to select an engineering consultant for design will begin this winter.
- Design of the replacement structure is anticipated to begin in late spring and continue through the rest of 2026.
Possible impacts
- Future construction will require temporary closure of existing bridge and trail.
Costs and funding source
- Preliminary estimates anticipate a total project budget of around $5m.
- Potential funding from outside sources, including grants, is being pursued to supplement City funding.
