Why is this project being done?

• The existing South Barton Bridge has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement.
• The bridge provides a key pedestrian and non-motorized link along the Border to Border Trail.
• Replacing the bridge also provides an opportunity to improve this connection and bring it up to current trail standards.

Work to be done

• Preliminary alternatives analysis is underway.
• Process to select an engineering consultant for design will begin this winter.
• Design of the replacement structure is anticipated to begin in late spring and continue through the rest of 2026.

Possible impacts

• Future construction will require temporary closure of existing bridge and trail.

Costs and funding source

• Preliminary estimates anticipate a total project budget of around $5m.
• Potential funding from outside sources, including grants, is being pursued to supplement City funding.
