Project Overview
This comprehensive visioning initiative is a vital step toward shaping the future of the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. The project was not originally planned, but due to urgent site conditions issues, work was initiated prior to the visioning process. The goal is to develop a thoughtful, inclusive plan that meets the evolving needs of vendors, staff, and the broader community—and that serves the city well into the future.
In 2023, structural issues were identified in the pavement near the northeast corner of the Farmers Market office building. A forensic investigation revealed significant foundation failure, compromising the safety and integrity of the structure for long-term use. To protect the health and safety of market staff, vendors, and the public, the decision was made to demolish the office building. Demolition began in winter 2025 and is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
With the removal of the building almost complete, City staff are developing a comprehensive project plan that will guide the next steps. A Request for Proposals (RFP) will soon be issued to select a design team to lead this effort in partnership with city staff. The scope of work will include:
- A market operations study
- Robust community engagement
- Conceptual and schematic design development
- Phasing and implementation strategies
- Funding exploration and planning
As the project progresses, updates will be regularly shared with the Parks Advisory Commission (PAC), the Public Market Advisory Commission (PMAC), and posted on this engagement page. Community participation will be central to this process, with opportunities to get involved shared via the Farmers Market, our GovDelivery newsletter, and social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
Public engagement will be a major component of the future market plan. Once a consultant has been selected and a plan identified, opportunities for involvement will be shared.
We recognize that long-term projects can be challenging, but we are committed to taking the time needed to do this right. The Farmers Market is a treasured community space, and together we have the opportunity to create a vibrant, functional, and inclusive market environment for generations to come.
