Location: Cerrado, Brazil

Description: The project is restoring over 12,000 hectares of degraded Cerrado biome through community-led assisted natural regeneration. It exclusively employs native species to enhance biodiversity, sequester more than a million tonnes of CO2 by 2055, while increasing climate adaptation, water and food resilience, energy independence and economic growth for local smallholder communities. Besides reforestation, the project also finances the installation of solar panels in farmhouses to power the water pumps that irrigate the farms, thus providing economic benefits and energy independence for rural communities. The project aims to scale across the Cerrado region, which covers about 200 million ha of central Brazil, one of the most threatened and over-exploited regions in Brazil, second only to the Atlantic Forests in vegetation loss and deforestation.
