Location: Caraga County, Michigan

Description: This improved forest management project focuses on 1,182 square miles of some of the most climate-resilient land in Michigan, which allows plant and animal species to find the habitat they need to adapt to a changing climate. Here, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has protected two working forest reserves—the Slate River Forest Reserve and Wilderness Lakes Reserve—that contribute to more than 85,000 acres of connected conservation lands. TNC manages these reserves using practices that not only protect their economic and recreational benefits, but also enhance the forest’s health and carbon sequestration and storage potential—demonstrating how nature can be part of the climate solution.
