Location: Mississippi Alluvial Valley

Description: TNC’s Floodplain Reforestation Program (FRP) is designed to reforest marginally productive agricultural land in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. Roughly 200,000 acres of frequently flooded lands will be restored using a site-specific mix of native bottomland hardwood forest. The program will enroll underserved landowners who historically have been unable to access federal reforestation resources, providing them with an alternative revenue stream through annual incentive payments for 30 years. The landowners retain ownership of their land, and at the end of the 40-year project period, will have valuable forests on their property. The project will reduce the impacts of flooding, reduce water consumption from irrigation, improve water quality, and provide valuable wildlife habitat, including migratory birds. The pilot program aims to reforest 3,600 acres in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. 125 of those acres have already been planted. [7]

Verification: The project will be certified under Verra’s VM0045 reforestation methodology and has partially completed the project design document.

Estimated Number of Offsets: 450,000 units estimated over the 40-year crediting period.

Price Per Credit: $5,000,000 - $7,000,000 total

Co-Benefits: Flood mitigation, habitat creation, aquifer replenishment, reduced nutrient runoff, increased access and economic benefits to land
